TRENTON - Governor Phil Murphy today signed an Executive Order establishing the Future of Work Task Force, charged with studying how technological innovation will impact the development of jobs and New Jersey’s economy. He also announced that the task force will be chaired by Chief Innovation Officer Dr. Beth Simone Noveck. The Governor previewed this task force in the Economic Development Strategic Plan he unveiled on Monday.
“Building a stronger and fairer economy requires a laser focus on reclaiming New Jersey as the state of innovation,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “However, we must not lose sight of the profound impacts that technological change will have on our workforce and economy. The insights provided by our Future of Work Task Force will ensure that all New Jersey workers share in the prosperity that innovation can deliver.”
While technological innovation drives productivity and technological growth, labor market disruptions caused by automation can often leave workers behind, fighting to maintain their place in the workforce and struggling to provide for their families. By 2025 and beyond, a significant share of today’s occupational activities could be automated. The Future of Work Task Force is designed to ensure that workers are protected against technological shifts that will drive the future of the New Jersey economy.
The task force will be charged with developing a policy roadmap that will enable the State to prepare for the future, and mitigate the effects of large-scale automation on the State’s economy and workforce. Insights gained through the task force will help ensure that all New Jersey workers find a way to adapt to inevitable technological change and continue to have access to good-paying and meaningful jobs.
The task force will feature no more than 25 members who hold relevant state and national expertise and experience. The key questions the task force will seek to address include:
"As technology continues to evolve faster than ever, it is essential for government to prepare for the inevitable challenges and opportunities that lie ahead," said Dr. Beth Simone Noveck, New Jersey’s Chief Innovation Officer. "We must ensure that our citizens, businesses and institutions - as well as our policies, laws and regulations - are equipped to thrive in the 21st century and beyond. I am honored that Governor Murphy has selected me to chair the Future of Work Task Force to lead the New Jersey government's efforts to ensure that the future is stronger and fairer for all."
